CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- The Syracuse women's soccer team was unable to get much going offensively against No. 1 Virginia in its ACC opener on Sunday afternoon, losing to the Cavaliers on the road by a final score of 5-0.
Â
Syracuse (4-5-1, 0-1 ACC) only registered one shot versus the nation's top team. Virginia (7-0-1, 1-0 ACC) remains unbeaten after its impressive performance against the Orange, scoring five goals on 22 shots.
"Virginia is the number one team in the nation for a reason," head coach Phil Wheddon said. "They were the best college team I have seen. They are a fast, dynamic team that knows how to attack and overrun you in several areas of the field."
Â
In net, sophomore Courtney Brosnan secured three total saves while Virginia goalkeepers Jessie Ferrari and Morgan Stearns split time, combining for the shutout. Stearns had one save on a shot from senior Erin Simon.Â
Â
Virginia opened up the scoring early, finding the back of the net in the 17th minute when it was Makenzy Doniak scoring off a pass from Kaili Torres. The goal from Doniak was the only one for Virginia in the first half before letting loose in the second.
Â
The Cavaliers had a big second half, scoring four goals starting in the 55th minute. Virginia tallied three goals in a matter of six minutes, taking a 4-0 lead in the 61st minute. The fifth and final goal for the Cavaliers came in the 83rd minute, proving why they are the top-ranked team in the nation.
"We were chasing the game," Wheddon said. "We conceded two quick goals in the second half and just have to be better defensively in our own penalty area."
Â
The Orange will stay on the road for its next game when it takes on #3 North Carolina on Thursday at 7 p.m. Both live video and live stats can be accessed via Cuse.com.
