SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The Syracuse women's soccer team will travel to take on No. 2 North Carolina on Thursday, Sept. 24 at 7:00 p.m. in its second ACC contest of the season.
It is the first time in program history that Syracuse (4-5-1, 0-1-0) will play the second-ranked team in the nation after playing the top-ranked team. The Orange lost to No. 1 Virginia (7-0-1, 1-0-0) on Sunday by a final score of 5-0, but are excited for another challenge against a top team in No. 2 North Carolina (8-0-1, 1-0-0).
"The great thing about the ACC is that every game is a great game," head coach Phil Wheddon said. "Every opposition poses new threats, but we are excited to play UNC."
Thus far this season, the Tar Heels have outscored their opponents by a total of 28-4, outshooting the competition 196-52. Jessie Scarpa, Summer Green and Alexa Newfield lead the offensive charge this season for North Carolina, combining for 37 points. Scarpa is the club's top scorer, leading the Tar Heels with five goals and five assists for 15 total points.
After losing by a final score of 5-0 to the nation's top team, the Orange will be tested again with another potent offense. The Tar Heels are coming off a 2-1 win at No. 9 Virginia Tech last Saturday.
"Virginia was a good test for us, it's obviously hard going up against the number one team in the nation," sophomore goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan said. "It definitely made us raise our level even though we didn't get the result we wanted. There were some good moments that we look to carry into our game on Thursday."
Syracuse won two consecutive games against non-conference opponents before losing to Virginia in its conference opener. Graduate student Alexis Koval is the Orange's leader in points, tallying three goals and four assists for 10 total points. Behind her is senior Maya Pitts with eight points, followed by sophomore Alex Lamontagne with seven.
The Orange offense will look to get back to its winning ways by battling against a tough squad in the Tar Heels.
The last time a Syracuse team faced off against the No. 1 ranked team followed by the No. 2 team was when the Orange men's lacrosse team won the 2004 National Championship. Syracuse defeated No. 1 Johns Hopkins in the final four before beating No. 2 Navy in the National Championship.

After North Carolina, the Orange will stay on the road for its next contest when it takes on No. 10 Virginia Tech on Sunday at 1 p.m.
