The Syracuse cross country teams enter the nation's most competitive regular season meet this weekend at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational.
ABOUT THE WISCONSIN INVITATIONAL
-Â The meet features 19 ranked men's programs, including seven of the top-10 teams and 17 ranked women's programs this season.
-Â The meet features a team from each of the USTFCCCA's nine regions
-Â This is the eight-annual event, hosted at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course in Madison, Wisconsin.
-Â The men's race is an 8k, the women's race is a 6k. Due to 31 teams competing in each race, race rosters are listed to seven competitors each like they are at the NCAA Championships. There are also 'B' races for student-athletes not competing in their team's top-seven.
SYRACUSE AT THE WISCONSIN INVITATIONAL
-Â The Syracuse men have won the event three times in the first-seven seasons it has been run, including both the inaugural race and the last two.
-Â The women won the event in 2010.
- The Orange men are the only program to have multiple team titles at the Wisconsin Invitational (3), no other team has more than one for either a men's or a women's team.Â
- Syracuse's combined titles (four) at the meet is also three more than any university can claim when combining both genders.
- 'Cuse has competed in every Wisconsin Invitational since the meet's inception in 2009.
RANKING THE ORANGE
-Â The Syracuse men enter the meet at No. 2 in the latest USTFCCCA poll - the exact same spot they were at this point last season.
-Â The women enter the meet ranked 20th. The Orange women have been in the top-20 of every poll this season.
LAST TIME OUT:
-Â The Syracuse men took second place at the Panorama Farms Invitational, following two first place wins this season.
- The Syracuse women raced to a third place finish for the second time in a row this season.
- Justyn Knight led the Orange to victory by winning the men's individual title and defeating the second place finisher by almost 16 seconds, creating a new course-record performance time.
- Five Orange runners finished in the top-20 for the men's team, including three top-seven performances.
- Madeleine Davison ran to an eighth place finish and Paige Stoner also finished in the top-20, running to a 12th place finish.
LAST TIME AT WISCONSIN
-Â The Syracuse men placed three runners in the top six, leading the way to win the Wisconsin Invitational for the second year in a row.
-The Syracuse women took home 11th place, improving one spot from the year before.
- Justyn Knight placed second, Martin Hehir finished fourth and Colin Bennie took sixth to lead the men's team to victory.
- 2016 graduate Margo Malone was the women's team top-finisher, finishing in 17th place with a time that was 20 seconds faster than the previous year at the same course.
