For the second consecutive year, Syracuse men's cross country standout Justyn Knight has been named USTFCCCA Northeast Region Men's Performer of the Year, while head coach Chris Fox earned USTFCCCA Men's Coach of the Year for the fourth-consecutive season.
The Syracuse men won their seventh NCAA Northeast Regional Championship this year, behind Knight winning the individual crown. It was the 10th regional title for Fox in 12 seasons, combining his mens and women's victories, and his seventh men's title in the last eight seasons.
Knight is the first Syracuse student-athlete to win the award multiple times and joins Iona's Leonard Korir (2010, 2011), Richard Kiplagat (2003, 2005) and Providence's Keith Kelly (1998, 2000) as the only men to win the award in multiple seasons.
Katie Zaferes, formerly Katie Hursey, is the Orange's only previous winner, taking the honor in 2009. Zaferes went on to compete in the Rio de Janeiro Olympics this summer in the triathlon for the United States.
Fox has now won USTFCCCA Northeast Coach of the Year honors nine times, including seven awards for the men's coach of the year (2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016) and twice earning women's coach of the year (2009, 2011). He also earned 2015 USTFCCCA National Coach of the Year.
Fox, Knight and the men's cross country team will look to defend their NCAA Championship on Saturday in Terre Haute, Indiana. The men's race gets underway at Noon and will be broadcast on NCAA.com.
