Sykes is averaging 17.3 points per game this season
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Heading into the 2014 NCAA Tournament, guard Brittney Sykes was racking up the accolades and awards: 2012 McDonald's All-American, United States U18 national team, 2013 BIG EAST All-Freshman Team, 2014 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Second Team. Following the Syracuse women's basketball program's first NCAA Tournament win, Sykes would go on to miss 31 games over the next 19 months due to two-season ending injuries.
The Newark, N.J. native returned to the court for her first full season last year, helping the Orange to their first appearance in the national final. Sykes was the team's lone representative on the All-Final Four Team.
Now, in her final campaign on campus, Sykes is back to where she once was. Through four games, the redshirt senior guard ranks second on the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 17.3 points and 8.0 rebounds per contest.
Against Drexel on Nov. 21, Sykes put together her best performance of the season, thus far. She recorded a team-high 21 points and seven boards against the Dragons. It marked her 12th 20-point game of her collegiate career.
Following her 21-point effort at Drexel, Sykes now ranks 12th on the program's all-time scoring list with 1,283 points in her collegiate career. Sykes and senior guard Alexis Peterson (1,284 career points) are both poised to leave as two of the top scorers in Syracuse history.
Sykes and the Orange are back in action on Friday night when they take on George Washington at the Gulf Coast Showcase. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. in Estero, Fla.
