Peterson and Sykes are the nation's top-scoring backcourt
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Entering the Syracuse women's basketball team's contest against Central Connecticut State on Dec. 4, senior guard Alexis Peterson and redshirt senior guard Brittney Sykes combined for 39.6 points per game, which ranked second nationally among NCAA Division I backcourts.
Peterson and Sykes combined for 52 points in the Orange's 95-63 victory against the Blue Devils. It marked the first time two Syracuse players each recorded at least 25 points in a single game since March 18, 2009.
"We have one of the best combinations in the country," head coach Quentin Hillsman said in his postgame press conference. "When you look at the top backcourts in the country, it is hard to find two that are better."
Peterson contributed 26 points, six rebounds, and 10 assists in the Orange victory. It marked her third double-double of her collegiate career, as well.
Sykes also scored 26 points against Central Connecticut State. The Newark, N.J. native also contributed a personal-best 14 rebounds, four assists, and five steals. She finished with her third double-double of the season and eighth of her career.
The duo has carried over its success from the final 18 games of the 2015-16 campaign. Peterson (17.3) and Sykes (12.1) combined to score more than 40 percent of the team's total points, helping the squad to 16 victories.
Peterson, Sykes, and Syracuse are back in action on Wednesday morning when it hosts Coppin State at 11 a.m. in the Carrier Dome. Wednesday's contest is School Day. Anti-bullying and health and wellness presentations will occur prior to tipoff.
