Analysis: Syracuse Shines on School Day

3,932 attended the first School Day against Coppin State
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – When the 2016-17 Syracuse women's basketball schedule was first released, one game may have stuck out to the eye. Syracuse and Coppin State were slated to meet on Wednesday, Dec. 7 at 11 a.m. in the Carrier Dome. There were no errors or typos, the Orange and Eagles would meet in the program's first School Day.
In front of the third-largest crowd in Syracuse women's basketball history, the team recorded a 76-30 win in front of 3,932 people. More than 3,000 students witnessed the Orange's seventh victory of the 2016-17 campaign, hailing from 19 different Syracuse-area schools.
"We like it," head coach Quentin Hillsman said in his postgame press conference. "Anytime you can have that atmosphere, it lifts your energy and you can play harder."
Syracuse clearly fed off the raucous crowd early. The team stormed out a to a 26-2 advantage after the opening 10 minutes of action. The Orange held its opposition scoreless for the first 9:52 of competition in the Carrier Dome.
"First of all, I would thank them all for coming out," sophomore guard Abby Grant stated. "They were a great crowd. It was electric out there. I just hope they had a lot of fun. We had a lot of fun on the court. We would love to have them back; it is a great atmosphere."
The club dismantled Coppin State in its fifth home contest of the season. Syracuse held a 50-point advantage with less than three minutes remaining in the third quarter, its largest lead of the year. In addition, the Eagles were held only to seven points in the first half.
"It was really special," redshirt senior guard Brittney Sykes added. "You get to see the kids there; they are full of energy. It rubs off on you. You forget that it is an 11 a.m. game. You know you are going to hear a lot of screams, so we are going to give them something to scream about."
The Orange return to action on Saturday afternoon when they host in-state foe Niagara at 3 p.m. Saturday's is "Four Quarters of Giveaways," a special prize will be available each quarter to those in attendance at the Carrier Dome.
