Seven named to ACC All-Academic teams
For the third time in the last-four ACC Cross Country and Track seasons, Syracuse's Martin Hehir has been named the ACC Scholar Athlete of the Year after helping the Orange to the 2015 Cross Country National Championship and having his success transition to the classroom in the first semester of the forensic science graduate program at Syracuse.
Hehir, who graduated last May with degrees in biology and Spanish, returned for his final year of eligibility in cross country and made the most of it, helping 'Cuse to its first national title since 1951 while finishing in the top-10 at the NCAA Championships individually.
Hehir earned his fourth-straight All-America nod (2014 cross country, 2015 indoor track, 2015 outdoor track, 2015 cross country), while leading Syracuse past Colorado in a historic finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championship.
In addition to Hehir, fellow All-American Colin Bennie (political science), Joe Kush (psychology) and Juris Silenieks (exercise science), were named to the All-ACC Men's Cross Country Academic Team for the Orange, who swept the postseason bringing home their third-straight ACC Championship and sixth conference title in seven years, and the NCAA Northeast Regional in addition to the NCAA Championship this season.
Hehir's selection to the team is the third of his career.
On the women's side, Margo Malone also earned her third selection to the All-ACC Women's Cross Country Academic Team. The senior biology major led the Orange in every race she participated in this season, including the NCAA Championship, where she led the women to their second-best finish in program history.
Joining Malone on the all-academic squad were junior Sydney Leiher and senior Cassia Hameline.
To be eligible for consideration for the team, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.0 grade point average or better for the previous semester and maintained a 3.0 cumulative average during his or her undergraduate academic career. Graduate students needed to maintain at least a 3.5 grade point average for both the previous semester and for their graduate school careers.
