Orange secure first conference title since 1992
For the first time since 1992, the Syracuse men's indoor track and field team is the conference champion.
Claiming its first indoor title since joining the ACC, the Orange men's cross country/track and field team continued its historic string of success. The program claimed the 2015 NCAA Cross Country Championship and has won four-straight conference titles in cross country and six in seven seasons under head coach Chris Fox.
Without throwers or pole vaulters and a limited roster in some events, the Syracuse distance group and hurdlers, who are among the best in the nation, carried 'Cuse to the title. Syracuse racked up large sums of points in the 5000-meters, 3000-meters and 60-meter hurdles on the weekend to secure the crown.
Friday Recap | Saturday Recap
Justyn Knight, who's in his freshman season of eligibility in indoor track, followed up his gold medal performance on Friday, with another gold in the 3000-meters on Saturday. A massive kick over the final lap and a half allowed him to reel in Virginia's Henry Wynne and cross the line in 8:02.68. Colin Bennie took fourth, in 8:05.42 and Philo Germano finished ninth in 8:09.23.
Knight, who in addition to both of his gold medals in 3000 and 5000-meters, Knight earned a silver as part of the distance medley relay squad on Thursday and his performance earned him performer of the meet honors. It's the second-straight season a Syracuse student-athlete has won the award, following Martin Hehir in 2015.
The other key event on Saturday was the 60-meter hurdles where Freddie Crittenden III took the crown for 'Cuse. He finished in 7.74 seconds, with freshman Richard Floyd (7.86 seconds) earning silver, and David Gilstrap took fourth (8.01 seconds).
Syracuse also secured men's points in the mile to start off the day on a strong note, with both Joel Hubbard and Adam Palamar finding the podium. Hubbard took second 4:02.62, with Palamar right on his heels in 4:02.73.
Winston Lee finished fifth in the 60-meter dash final, with a time of 6.77 seconds. To earn four more points for 'Cuse.
The Orange finished with 88 points, ahead of Clemson (76.5), which took second.
On the women's side, Shaina Harrison was a podium finisher for Syracuse, winning silver in the 60-meter dash. She clocked in a personal best 7.29 seconds, but was edged by Myasia Jacobs of Clemson (7.24).
Sydney Leiher turned in a strong performance in the women's mile, cruising to a time of 4:40.83.
The Syracuse women would finish 11th with 27 points.
