SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse softball team sailed past NC State 13-0 in five innings to capture the series win on Sunday afternoon at Skytop Softball Stadium.
Â
A lead-off double to left field in opening at bat of the game was all the Orange would give the Wolfpack, as a solid performance by sophomore AnnaMarie Gatti in the circle carried Syracuse to a shutout win and left NC State hitless the rest of the way.
Â
Sophomore Sammy Fernandez had a perfect showing at the plate today, going 4-4 while driving in five runs. The Carmel, N.Y. native recorded her eighth double of the season off of a three-RBI jack to left field.
Â
Redshirt sophomore Olivia Martinez posted her third multiple-hit game of the season while recording her first home run of her Syracuse career. She finished the afternoon going 2-3 at the plate while racking up four RBIs.
Â
Sophomore Maddi Doane tallied two hits and three RBIs, while freshman Hannah Dossett recorded her fifth home run of the season.
Â
The Syracuse offense sparked in the bottom of the second, as a lead-off homer to left field off of the scoreboard by Dossett put the first run on the board. Martinez continued the trend three at bats later, sending one over the left field fence with Rachel Burkhardt on base for her first homer of the season to make it a 3-0 ballgame.
Â
A Wolfpack error in the same frame and two consecutive base hits by Fernandez and Doane plated two more runs to make it 5-0 in the bottom of the second.
Â
The Orange didn't stop in the next inning, as two walks and a base hit by Burkhardt loaded up the bases with Fernandez at the plate. With two outs on the board, the sophomore sent one to deep left field for a three-RBI double that made it an 8-0 ballgame heading into the fourth inning.
Â
Syracuse capped the victory with a five-run inning in the bottom of the fourth, as a two-RBI single to right field by Martinez added two more runs to the mix after base hits by freshmen Andrea Bombace and Alicia Hansen.
Â
With bases loaded, Fernandez stepped up once again and sent one through the right side for a two-RBI base hit that gave the Orange a 12-run advantage. Doane topped it off in the next at bat with a single to left field that drove in Alyssa Dewes at second home to seal a 13-0 victory for 'Cuse.
