Three Syracuse cross country stars were honored for their achievements in the classroom on Thursday, when they were named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team.
Cross country All-Americans Martin Hehir and Colin Bennie earned the award for the men, while both finishing inside the top-10 and leading Syracuse to the NCAA Championship, while Margo Malone earned the honor for the women after taking Syracuse to its second-best finish ever at the NCAA Championships this fall.
Hehir, closed his career with four-straight All-America awards between cross country and track after wrapping up his eligibility during the cross country season. This is his fourth time earning CoSIDA Academic All-District honors.
A CoSIDA First Team Academic All-American last season and second team honoree the year prior, Hehir finished ninth at the NCAA Cross Country Championships this season, his best mark ever, while in the biomedical forensics graduate program at SU after earning degrees in biology and Spanish last spring.
Â
He finished his career with three ACC Championships (2013 and 2014 cross country, 2015 indoor 5000-meter championship) and was named the ACC Scholar Athlete of the Year three times (twice in cross country, once in indoor track). He was named the Doris Soladay Award winner at the 10th annual 'Cuse Awards earlier this month, which is considered the highest honor a Syracuse student-athlete can receive.
Bennie was another major factor in the Orange's NCAA Cross Country Championship and ACC Indoor Track Championship this season. The sophomore finished eighth at the NCAA Cross Country Championship this fall and went on to be an All-American in the indoor season as well.
The sophomore is set to compete in the 10,000-meters at Thursday's NCAA East Preliminary and is the No. 3 seed entering the event. He is majoring in political science.
Malone, the 2015 ACC Champion in the 10,000-meters, will compete in Thursday's NCAA East Preliminary in the event as well, looking to make a trip back to Eugene, Oregon where she earned USTFCCCA First Team All-America honors in the 10k last season.
Â
The senior led the Syracuse women's cross country team to its second-best finish at the NCAA Championships in program history this season after reaching the podium once again at the ACC Championships this fall. She is majoring in biology and nutrition sciences.
Â
All three All-District honorees will now have an opportunity to be named a CoSIDA Academic All-American, which will be selected in June.
