‘Cuse to play Friday, Saturday non-conference games
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Following a pair of season-opening home games, the Syracuse volleyball team heads to the Midwest to play Oregon State and Iowa State at the Nebraska Invite in Lincoln, Nebraska. The Orange (0-2, 0-0 ACC) will face the Beavers (2-1, 0-0 Pac-12) on Friday, Sept. 2 at 4:30 p.m. (ET), and then will turn around and play the Cyclones (1-1, 0-0 Big-12) on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 6:00 p.m. 'Cuse will not face tournament host and national No. 1 ranked Nebraska.
The Orange head west after a pair of home losses to UConn and Colgate at the Women's Building. After losing four senior starters from the 2015 squad, Syracuse is rebuilding and learning with a nearly brand new team this season.
"We are just trying to find out which way of playing is better, but we are still searching," head coach Leonid Yelin said. "We are all learning. Every one of the players are trying to get better, trying to find a way to be better together. It's a process. It's kind of a painful process, you know, but we have to get through it. We have to go through it."
The Beavers present the first test for the Orange on the road, as the pair have only met once in the history of both programs. Oregon State grabbed the win in three sets when the team met in 1996.
Oregon State heads to Nebraska after a 2-1 start to the season at the Ultra Ankle Challenge. The Beavers defeated Utah State in five sets, but then lost to Portland in five sets the same day. They then went on to close out the tournament with a sweep of Seattle, 3-0.
The Orange lead the all-time series with Iowa State, 2-0-0, however the pair haven't met on the court since 2012. Syracuse endured a five-set battle with the No. 18 Cyclones the last time out, taking the final set to extra points to grab the win.
The Cyclones head to Lincoln with a 1-1 record on the year, as they swept Wichita State in three sets and then fell to No. 18 Creighton in four sets at their own Iowa State Challenge.
"I feel like these teams are very dominant and very disciplined, so they are very smart with hitting shots and playing defense," sophomore setter Jalissa Trotter said of the upcoming opponents.
"They usually stick with the basics and go from there and they're very consistent, which I think we're working on as a team to get better at. They are more disciplined… disciplined on the blocks, defense, and hitting. I think that's our biggest thing to stay on… focusing on the basics is what we need to do."
