ITHACA, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's tennis team opened the fall season at the Cornell Invitational Sept. 9-11 in Ithaca, N.Y. The Orange had an impressive weekend with Dina Hegab winning her flight in singles and Nicole Mitchell and doubles team of Mitchell and Hegab making the semifinals.
"This weekend was about getting some match play against different people besides ourselves," head coach Younes Limam said. "The ladies fought hard throughout the tournament and it was great to see Dina win her draw."
Hegab was seeded No. 1 in the B Singles draw and opened up with a 6-2, 6-4 win against Haley Hollins of Buffalo. She went on to win against Sanjana Sudhir and Mercedes Losada Rubio also of Buffalo to claim the flights title.
Mitchell also played in the B Singles flight and won 6-0, 6-1 against Allison Roma of Binghamton. She moved on to face Margarita Kotok of Buffalo, winning 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. In the quarterfinals, she dropped a 6-1, 6-4 decision to Losada Rubio of Buffalo.
Maria Tritou was placed in the A singles draw and won her first match against Michelle Eisenberg of Binghamton, 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-1. In the second round, Tritou fell 7-5, 6-2 to Chantal Martinez Blanco of Buffalo. Libi Mesh put up a fight in three sets against Priyanka Shah, but ultimately came up short. In the consolation bracket, Mesh picked up a 6-4, 6-7 (3), 10-5 win against Tanja Stojanovska of Buffalo.
In doubles, Mitchell and Hegab advanced to the semifinals with wins against teams from Buffalo and Cornell, but lost one match short of the finals to the eventual winners from Cornell. Tritou and Mesh teamed up in the tournament but lost their only match to a team from Buffalo.
Syracuse will continue fall play on Sept. 16 in the Columbia Invitational.
