SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sheridan Street scored the game-winning goal in the 63rd minute and Alana O'Neill sealed the 2-0 victory for the Syracuse women's soccer team against Buffalo (3-3-2) on Thursday night at the SU Soccer Stadium.
The Orange now have a four-game winning streak and three straight shutouts. Overall, Syracuse has kept six opponents scoreless in 2016, the most for the program since the 2011 season. Syracuse wraps up non-conference play with a 7-1-1 record, the most wins through nine games since 1996. The Orange improve to 4-1 in the friendly confines of the SU Soccer Stadium this season.
Syracuse looked dangerous in the attack for most of the game against Buffalo. The Orange recorded 12 shots on goal, the highest of the season, and 21 shots, one shy of the season high previously reached against Colgate on Aug. 19. The Bulls goalkeeper, Laura Dougall, was tested all night and ended the game with 10 saves.
After a scoreless first half, Street put the Orange on the board in the 63rd minute. After a successful slide tackle, Eva Gordon was able to get the ball away from a Buffalo player and Maddie Iozzi won the ball. Iozzi passed to Sydney Brackett streaking down the sideline. Brackett dribbled into the penalty area, finding O'Neill who one touched it to Street in front of the goal. Street fired the ball with her left foot past the diving goalkeeper.
It was the second goal of the season for Street and the fifth of her career.
Down 1-nil, Buffalo brought intensity in the final minutes looking to equalize. The Orange defense and junior goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan prevailed and were able to clear out or save any goal attempts by the Bulls. Brosnan kept the game scoreless with a spectacular save in the final minutes of the game. A shot was fired from about 15 yards out and looked to be headed straight for the back of the net, but Brosnan was able to jump and punch the ball up and out-of-bounds.
The Bulls looked to make one more run at tying up the game with a corner kick with less than a minute left in play. The Orange were able to clear and O'Neill found herself with the ball at the halfway line. The junior outran three Buffalo defenders and slotted a shot past the Buffalo goalkeeper for the insurance goal with 35 seconds left in the game.
O'Neill now has four goals in 2016, the most of any Syracuse player this season. It was her sixth career goal.
Brosnan ended the game with a season-high five saves and her fifth clean sheet of the season. She and the Orange defense have allowed only four goals in nine games, giving the junior a 0.44 goals against average in 2016. Brosnan, goalkeeper Annette Cappellino and the Orange backline have not allowed a goal in the last 301:24 of play.
The Orange snapped Buffalo's five-game unbeaten streak. The Bulls scored six goals last weekend and have scored three or more goals in a match four times this season, but were held scoreless tonight.
Syracuse will be back in action on Sunday when they host No. 19/20 Notre Dame at noon to begin Atlantic Coast Conference play. The Fighting Irish are 5-1-2 on the season.
