RICHMOND, Va. – No. 2 Syracuse scored 10 unanswered goals to break open a tight game and defeat No. 7 seed Virginia Tech, 20-13, in the quarterfinal of the ACC Women's Lacrosse Tournament in Richmond, Va. The Orange advance to the tournament semifinal for the fourth consecutive year where they will face Virginia on Friday, April 28 at 8 p.m.
Â
"That's the potential we have," Syracuse head coach Gary Gait said of his team's offensive outburst. "We battled back. They put 10 minutes of great lacrosse together. We scored 10 goals in 10 minutes. That's an amazing thing."
Â
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Virginia Tech (11-8) jumped out to an early lead with four straight goals to start the game before junior Alie Jimerson sparked a Syracuse scoring run. She assisted on junior Riley Donahue's goal and then scored two goals of her own. Sophomore Natalie Wallon capped the run when she found the back of the net off a pass from freshman Emily Hawryschuk to tie the game at 4-4.
Â
The teams traded goals before Virginia Tech converted on a free position attempt with one second on the clock to take a 6-5 lead into the locker room at intermission.
Â
The Orange (14-5) tallied the first two goals of the second half to take their first lead of the game at 7-6, but the Hokies responded with four straight goals to go back on top, 9-7. Virginia Tech led 11-10 before redshirt freshman Cara Quimby scored an unassisted to goal to tie the game for the fifth time in the second half. That goal was the first of 10 straight, including three in a span of 1:02, for the Orange as they took their largest lead of the game on senior Tori Wehner's goal with 1:11 on the clock.
Tristan McGinley converted a free position attempt with 47 seconds remaining for Virginia Tech's first goal in more than 10 minutes, and Marissa Davey added a goal with nine seconds on the clock for the 20-13 final.
Â
