Over the past few weeks, head coach Ange Bradley has continually announced her class of 2017. Previously, she announced Sarah Luby and Emma Likly.
Next season, Borg van der Velde will join head coach Ange Bradley's Orange for the 2017 season after fourteen years as a MHC-Ede elite goalkeeper and two years on the Dutch East district team.
van der Velde, who enrolled at Syracuse in January and had a strong spring season with the Orange.
"Borg is an outstanding goalkeeper," Bradley said. "She brings maturity calm and focus to our backfield. She is an exceptional leader and a great competitor. I look forward to seeing her develop this fall."
van der Velde played goalkeeper for MHC-Ede under the direction of head coach Lukas Westra. In 2012, she earned a place on the East Dutch district team—where she played nationally for two seasons.Â
van der Velde is excited to suit up for this Orange this fall and take her best shot at winning both the ACC and NCAA championships.
"I have always dreamed of playing at a high level, playing on the Syracuse Field Hockey team fulfills that dream," van der Velde said. "When I first found out about SU, the team had just won the NCAA championship and I immediately wanted to be a part of that team."
The competitive aspect of what playing for Syracuse and in the ACC is what excites van der Velde about the program as she looks forward to taking the field in contests with the nation's best competition.
"The ACC is the strongest league in field hockey and it is very exciting to play against the top teams in the country," she said. "I want to help create a culture of hard work and I want to be on the team who wins both an ACC and a NCAA championship."
The Orange have had strong goaltending in recent seasons, including U.S. National Team member Jess Jecko, who van der Velde most wants to emulate and is looking forward to working with Jecko, who has spent time as a volunteer assistant coach with the program.
In addition to the winning tradition Syracuse has created, van der Velde was also drawn to the Orange for Syracuse's strong academic reputation.
