4-of-5 regular season meets return from 2016
The Syracuse men's cross country team enters 2017 looking for a third-consecutive podium finish at the NCAA Championships and the women are seeking a return to the event with both teams bringing back the majority of their roster to compete this season.
'Cuse will repeat four of the five regular season events the squad competed in last season and replicate the 2015 schedule that saw the Orange men come away with the national championship in its entirety.
Syracuse will open the season at the Harry Lang Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 2, an event that both teams swept the scoring at last season. Hosted by nearby Colgate, Madeleine Davison won her collegiate debut for the women, followed closely by fellow freshmen Emma Wilson (2nd) and McKenzie Altmayer (4th) while track All-American Paige Stoner finished third. Griff Molino took home the men's race, followed by Dominic Hockenbury, Joe Dragon and Aidan Tooker, who were all racing unattached.
'Cuse will then go to State College, Pa. to race in the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational on Sept. 8. Syracuse has won back-to-back individual titles on the men's side with Colin Bennie (2015) and Iliass Aouani (2016) taking home the last-two titles.
Syracuse will then head to the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown on Friday, Sept. 22. The Orange didn't race in the event last season, opting for the Panorama Farms Invite the same weekend. In 2015, the event was the debut of the Orange's eventual championship roster, with Two-time cross country All-American Justyn Knight taking home the title with Bennie and Martin Hehir also posting top-five finishes. Alex Cooper (69th) is the lone member of the current women's squad to have competed in that race two years ago.
Three weeks after Boston, the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational presented by Under Armour will highlight the regular season on Oct. 13. One of the nation's premier regular season events, Syracuse won both the 2014 and 2015 men's titles at the event, while Knight took home the individual title in 2016. Stoner raced to a 44th-place finish to lead the women.
Both squads will then close out the regular season with another local meet, the John Reif Memorial hosted by Cornell on Oct. 20.
Heading into the ACC Championships on Friday, Oct. 27 in Louisville, Kentucky, the men's squad is seeking its fifth-straight ACC Championship, sixth-straight conference title and eighth in the last-nine seasons under head coach Chris Fox.
The squads will then return to Buffalo, N.Y. for the NCAA Northeast Regional on Friday, Nov. 10. It's the first time the event has been in Buffalo since 2011, when both 'Cuse squads took home northeast region titles.
Like the ACC meet three-weeks prior, the NCAA Championship will take place in Louisville. It'll be run on the same course where the Orange took home its first national championship since 1951 two years ago.
Syracuse will return five of its seven runners from this year's NCAA Championship roster on the men's side, highlighted by a pair of two-time cross country All-Americans in Knight and Bennie and 2015 All-American Philo Germano. Aouani, who was USTFCCCA National Performer of the Week after his Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational win, and Kevin James also competed on last year's championship roster and are set to return. In addition, Tooker will likely factor into the mix coming off an All-America worthy track season in the 3000-meter steeplechase, as well as other freshmen who redshirted this year and a talented incoming recruiting class.
The women's team will lose only Sydney Leiher from its NCAA regional roster due to graduation. Highlighted by track All-American Stoner, five of the other six competitors on that squad were underclassmen.
