Over the past few weeks, head coach Ange Bradley has continually announced her class of 2017. Previously, she announced Emma Claire Stewart, Audrey Matthew, Florine Hogendoorn, Claire Cooke, Borg van der Velde, Sarah Luby, Isabelle Sumichrast and Emma Likly.
Kailey Smith, an all-league player for Davis High School in Davis, California who led her high school team to a 12-0 record in league play as a senior, is set to bolster the Orange midfield in 2017.
"Kailey is a great student-athlete," said head coach Ange Bradley. "She has a tremendous work ethic and a strong commitment to growth. She possesses many intangibles that will allow her to be successful. We welcome her to our Syracuse family."
Smith was a team captain her senior year under head coach Sandie Marotti-Huckins for Davis, where her team ended the season with a record of 14-1-1 the 12-0 mark in league play.
"Kailey is a natural leader who is capable of great things and will only continue to grow and mature as person and a player at Syracuse" Marotti-Huckins said.
In addition to her success playing field hockey for her high school, Kailey also played Lacrosse her freshman and sophomore years, participated in track and field her Junior year, and played for The Davis Mad Cows field hockey club under head coach Frank Marotti.
"Having played this difficult game only a few years, she has turned herself into an outstanding field hockey player." Marotti said. "Her willingness to learn as much as she can through trial and error, and taking suggestions on ways to improve is uncanny."
Smith intends to pursue a degree in policy and international relations during her time at Syracuse. In addition to her academic pursuits, Smith is eager to accomplish big things on the field as well.
"During my time at Syracuse, I want to be able to help bring in another National Championship!" Smith said. "Besides that, I want to be able to push myself physically to the high standards that all Syracuse athletes hold themselves to."
Additionally, Smith looks forward to having the opportunity to play in the nation's best field hockey conference.
"To have the opportunity to play in the ACC means a commitment to the game," Smith said. "I think that over the years, the ACC has continued to play at such a high and commanding level and to be a part of that conference is such an opportunity."
The daughter of Naomi Davis and Jason Smith, Kailey has one brother, Elijah. She says her hope is to leave a long standing legacy by playing and performing at a high and competitive level.
Â
"Having the opportunity to play for Syracuse on Coyne Field is a huge honor and means that I am part of a legacy created by past players and responsible for upholding the history of excellence pursued there." Smith said.
