The Syracuse cross country team will compete in the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational on Friday, an event where the No. 3 Orange men claimed the team title and Iliass Aouani won his Orange debut last season.
Last Year at Harry Groves:
- Syracuse put seven men in the top-14 overall to easily sweep the men's titile last season.
- Behind Aouani, Philo Germano and eventual All-American Joel Hubbard placed second and third respectively.
- Kevin James, who won the individual title at Colgate last week, would place sixth overall as well.
- The women's team took third, led by then true freshman Madeleine Davison, who finished third overall.
Last Week at Harry Lang Invite:
- 'Cuse won the men's and women's team titles, while Kevin James won the individual crown at Colgate in the season opener.
- Madeleine Davison led the women with a second place finish, as Rachel Bonner and Olivia Elston also turned in top-five finishes.
Ranking the Orange:
- The Syracuse men's cross country team was picked third in the USTFCCCA Preseason Coaches Poll this week, the same spot the Orange concluded last year in at the NCAA Championships.
- The 'Cuse women's team is receiving votes in the poll.
Foreshadowing NCAAs:
- The top finisher at this event has gone on to make the Orange's NCAA Championship each of the last-four seasons.
- Aouani competed at the event in 2016 and also at nationals - with Kevin James, Philo Germano and Joel Hubbard also racing at Penn State last year.
- The event was Colin Bennie's arrival on the national scene in 2015. He won the event and went on to finish eighth at the NCAA Championships later that year.
- Joel Hubbard took second to lead the Orange in 2014 before making the nationals squad for the first time.
- Syracuse did not compete at the event in 2013.
National Honors Looming
- The Orange have also seen an athlete earn USTFCCCAÂ National Athlete of the Week after this race each of the last-two seasons.
- Aouani (2016) and Bennie (2015) each were awarded the honor after their wins here.
