SYRACUSE, N.Y. – For their contributions in a pair of conference wins over Georgia Tech and No. 11/12 Florida State, sophomore Tiana Mangakahia and redshirt junior Miranda Drummond both garnered weekly awards. Mangakahia was named ACC Player of the week, while Drummond earned College Sports Madness National and ACC Player of the Week.
This is the second conference award for Mangakahia as the sophomore was named ACC Co-Player of the Week on Nov. 27. The Australia native dropped a career-high 44 points against the Yellow Jackets on Jan. 4, the second-most points scored by an Orange, male or female, in Carrier Dome history. She went 20-of-21 from the charity stripe for a new career-high in made free throws as well.
"I am very happy for Tiana," said head coach Quentin Hillsman. "She is an explosive scorer, stabilizing floor leader and a fierce competitor."
While her scoring numbers were not as high against Florida State, Mangakahia dished out 13 dimes for her 11th game with 10 or more assists this season. She snagged six rebounds and notched four steals to contribute on defense for the Orange.
The second part of the dynamic duo, Drummond earned College Sports Madness' National Player of the Week and ACC Player of the Week following her 38-point effort in the Orange's upset win over No. 11/12 Florida State. The Binghamton native set new career-highs in points (38), field goals made (14) and 3-pointers made, knocking down eight shots from beyond the arc.
"Miranda is a solid contributor to our success," said Hillsman. "She consistently makes winning plays for us."
Drummond shot .700 from the field against Florida State and recorded back-to-back double-digit outings this past week. She has scored in double-figures in 15 games this season and is averaging 17.5 points per game. The redshirt junior ranks 19 in the nation and third in the ACC in 3-point field goals made.
Mangakahia, Drummond and the rest of the Orange return to action on Sunday, Jan. 14 when they hit the road to face NC State. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. and the game can be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
