
Hoffmann Scores in Loss to No. 16 Wake Forest

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Syracuse field hockey sophomore Carolin Hoffmann scored her first goal of the season in a 4-1 loss on the road to No. 16 Wake Forest Sunday afternoon in Athletic Coast Conference play. The Orange move to 8-5 overall and stand at 1-4 in the ACC while the Demon Deacons improve to 8-6 on the season and 2-3 in conference action.
Syracuse took a 1-0 lead in the 9th minute on a goal by Hoffman, the first of her sophomore campaign. The Demon Deacons evened things up in the 14th minute of the match. Wake Forest took a 2-1 the lead with a goal from Anne van Hoff, her seventh of the season, at the 19th minute, a lead in which Wake Forest would hold through halftime.
The Demon Deacons outshot Syracuse 8-6 in the first half while holding the advantage in corners, 6-2.
After the break, Wake Forest's Kelsey Gill scored off a penalty corner rebound to extend the Demon Deacons' lead to 3-1. At the 64th minute of the match, van Hoff scored an insurance goal for WFU off another penalty corner.
Wake Forest outshot 'Cuse 11-9 and had an 8-5 advantage in corners in the game. Roos Weers lead the team with three shots while Borg van der Velde recorded two saves.
The Orange return home Friday, Oct. 19 for the final ACC game of the season against Louisville at 7 p.m. It's Senior Night as Syracuse Athletics will celebrate the careers of Jamie Martin, Caroline Cady, and Weers.
