WINTHROP, Mass. - Syracuse freshman forward Lauren Bellefontaine is College Hockey America's Rookie of the Month, the league announced Thursday, Nov. 1. She earned the honor for her play in the month of October.
Bellefontaine led all CHA freshmen in goals (4) and points (7) through the opening month of the season. She scored one goal against Mercyhurst (Oct. 12), two at Lindenwood (Oct. 20) and one at No. 2 Clarkson (Oct. 27).
"She's come in and done what we hoped she could do," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "She's playing a regular shift, she's on the power play, she kills penalties. We can't ask for anything more than that."
Bellefontaine leads the Orange with seven points through eight games this season, recording five of those points in CHA games. She has tallied three assists to go along with her team-high four goals, and she has notched at least one shot in each game this season. She also leads all forwards with 15 blocks.
Bellefontaine's first career multi-point game came against Mercyhurst, where she scored her first career goal and added an assist. The center recorded her first career multi-goal game at Lindenwood, scoring two goals and posting an assist in the Orange's 6-3 win over the Lions.
"She carries herself well and plays with confidence," Flanagan said. "Her innate abilities have been exceptional. She handles the puck, she's smart in how she manages the puck, she skates well and on the physical aspect of things, she's done a great job."
Bellefontaine, who earned CHA Rookie of the Week honors earlier this season, is the fourth Orange student-athlete in program history to receive the league's Rookie of the Month award, joining Jessica Sibley, Alysha Burriss and Stephanie Grossi.
Sibley was the first Syracuse rookie to receive the award, taking home the honor in Jan. 2014. She earned it for a second time one month later, posting seven points and accumulating a plus-six rating in nine games during the month of February.Â
Grossi and Burriss received the award for three consecutive months during the 2014-15 season. Grossi earned the award in November, Burriss claimed the honor in December and Grossi took it home once again in January.
Bellefontaine and the Orange continue CHA play this weekend with a pair of games at Penn State. Puck drop is set for 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3 and 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4.
