WINTHROP, Mass. - Syracuse freshman defenseman Shelby Calof was named College Hockey America Rookie of the Week after scoring her first career goal and earning her first career point against No. 10 Colgate, the conference announced Monday, Dec. 10.
Calof powered a slap shot past Raiders goaltender Julia Vandyk to score the game's opening goal on Thursday, Dec. 6. Her first collegiate tally, assisted by junior forward Logan Hicks, came five minutes into the first period and gave Syracuse an early 1-0 lead over Colgate.
The first-year newcomer, who has one point (1 goal, 0 assists) in 19 games played this season, is the third Orange skater to earn the conference's Rookie of the Week honor this year. Freshman forward Lauren Bellefontaine was named the league's top rookie for the week of Oct. 22, while freshman forward Marielle McHale earned the award for the week of Nov. 5.
Bellefontaine was also named CHA Rookie of the Month for October. She led all CHA freshmen in goals (4) and points (7) through the opening month of the season.
Syracuse (4-14-1 overall, 4-3-0 CHA) concluded the first half of its season this past weekend. The Orange will reconvene in late December for a trip to Montreal, playing three exhibition games at the Theresa Humes Invitational from Dec. 28-30. The Orange face off against Nipissing, St. FX and host Concordia over the three-day period.
The regular season restarts Tuesday, Jan. 8, when Syracuse plays non-conference foe RPI in Troy, N.Y.
