Softball Sweeps, Eclipses 500 Wins

FAIRFAX, Va. – Syracuse recorded its 500th win in program history with a 6-1 victory over Monmouth Sunday morning at the Patriot Classic. The Orange defeated George Mason, 11-6, in the afternoon contest to improve to 10-6 this season.
Game 1: Syracuse 6, Monmouth 1
Sophomore Alexa Romero pitched a complete game and was one out away from her second no-hitter of 2018. She improves to 7-3 after giving up one run on two hits with a walk and eight strikeouts.
Senior Sammy Fernandez led the Orange, batting 3-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and a run. Sophomore Toni Martin also tripled and finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs. Juniors Bryce Holmgren and Alicia Hansen each drove in one run.
Fernandez hit a leadoff triple in the first and would later score on a Monmouth error. In the fifth inning, Martin cleared the bases with a two RBI triple and Fernandez followed with an RBI single to give the Orange a 4-0 lead.
'Cuse added two insurance runs in the seventh off RBI hits from Hansen and Holmgren. In the bottom of the inning, Romero's no-hitter was broken up by a double from Samantha Tomasetti. Amber Wozniak brought home Tomasetti with an RBI single in the next at-bat and Romero ended the game by striking out the following batter.
Game 2: Syracuse 11, George Mason 6
Freshman Lailoni Mayfield went 2-for-4 with a triple, three RBI and a run and Holmgren batted 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI and three runs to lead Syracuse past George Mason. Freshman Gabby Teran finished 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs.
Miranda Hearn earned her first collegiate win, as Syracuse's most effective reliever. In two scoreless innings, she gave up two hits with a walk and a strikeout. Senior AnnaMarie Gatti pitched the first 3.2 innings and conceded four runs (one earned) on six hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Senior Baylee Douglass surrendered two runs (one earned) in 1.1 innings of action.

With one out in the second, 'Cuse got runners on second and third. Hansen hit an RBI single and Holmgren followed with a two RBI double to increase the lead to four. Teran capped off the scoring in the inning with an RBI single to give Syracuse a 5-0 lead.
Freshman Neli Casares-Maher hit an RBI single in fourth and Teran scored on a George Mason error. The Patriots loaded the bases in the bottom half of the inning and scored four runs. Douglass came on in relief with two outs and struck out the first batter she faced to get the Orange out of the jam.
Martin hit an RBI single in the fifth and Mayfield hit a three RBI triple in the sixth to give the Orange an 11-4 lead.
George Mason scored their final two runs off bases loaded walks in the sixth.

Syracuse holds an all-time record of 501-437-1.
Head coach Mike Bosch sits seven wins shy of 600 career wins. Bosch is 593-287-2 all-time and 68-51 at 'Cuse.
Holmgren has reached base in 38 straight games for the Orange.
