'Cuse Announces 2018 Slate
8/10/2018 2:20:00 PM | Cross Country
It'll be familiar courses for Syracuse cross country teams in 2018, as the Orange roll back the same regular season destinations as the 2017 and 2015 schedules, setting up for 'Cuse to seek a sixth-straight ACC title.
Syracuse will open its slate once again at the Harry Lang Invitational on Sept. 1 – an event the men's and women's teams have swept each season since 2010. Men's winner Kevin James returns this season, as well as Madeleine Davison, Rachel Bonner and Olivia Elston, who posted top-five finishes for the women.
A week later, the Orange head to the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational at Penn State. Last time out, junior Aidan Tooker posted a second-place finish to highlight the event, while redshirt-freshman Julien Webster turned in a ninth-place finish.
Another return of a top Tooker performance will come in Boston on Sept. 21, when Syracuse heads to the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown. Tooker joined since graduated teammates Colin Bennie and Philo Germano in the top-five at the meet, leading the Orange to another victory.
The stiffest regular season competition awaits on Oct. 13 at the NCAA Pre-Nationals meet at Wisconsin. Due to the Badgers hosting the NCAA Championships this season, the Pre-Nats will replace the Nuttycombe Invitational on this date, which is an event the Orange had attended each year since 2013. However, the course remains the same and the competition will be equally challenging at this highlight meet. Shannon Malone turned in a top-50 performance last season and Tooker finished 10th at the meet. 2017 NCAA Champion Justyn Knight made his debut here and successfully defended his individual championship last season.
SU will then close out its regular season on Oct. 19 at the John Reif Memorial.
The ACC Championships return to Boston on Oct. 26, site of the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown, with the Syracuse men looking for a sixth-straight ACC title and a seventh-straight conference championship, dating back to the 2012 BIG EAST title. If the Orange successfully defend their crown, they'll tie Maryland (1964-69) for the longest conference championship streak in ACC history. In addition to the team titles, 'Cuse claimed individual championships from Knight and Paige Stoner last season.
Syracuse was so dominant on the men's side last season, that the other 14 teams combined score was higher than the 27 points the Orange scored to defend their title. Knight, Bennie, Germano, Tooker, Dominic Hockenbury, and Joe Dragon earned All-ACC honors, while Iliass Aouani finished 22nd, one place out of All-ACC accolades.
Two weeks after ACCs, the teams head west on I-90 to Buffalo for the NCAA Northeast Regional. This is another event where the Orange men will look to defend their title. In addition, Shannon Malone had a stellar performance there last season, taking third.
The NCAA Championships will be held on Nov. 16 in Madison, Wisconsin. Both teams qualified for the event last season, with Knight and Stoner coming away with All-America honors. The highlight was Knight becoming the first individual NCAA Champion in program history.
