Orange Clash with Tigers Dec. 2
8/22/2018 3:30:00 PM | Women's Basketball
It's a matchup 41 years in the making. In 1977, Towson ended the Syracuse University women's basketball season in the former Eastern Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (EAIAW) Tournament. On Dec. 2, the Orange welcome the Tigers to the Carrier Dome for the first time in program history. It marks the first meeting between the two since the end of the 1977 season and second in the two teams' histories.
Â
With Towson on the itinerary, Syracuse will play a Colonial Athletic Association team for the fourth-straight year. The Orange have played Drexel in each of the last three seasons.
Â
Towson is coming off a 9-21 season where the Tigers went 4-14 in the CAA and lost in the first round of the CAA Tournament. Second-year Coach Diane Richardson looks to Nukiya Mayo, the second-leading scorer from a season ago with 12.6 points per game, and Danielle Durjan, who started in 29 of 30 games for the Tigers as a junior.
Â
'Cuse returns all five starters from the 2017-18 squad that went 22-9 overall and 10-6 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Tiana Mangakahia is back for her junior season after an outstanding first year with the Orange. She was the statistical national champion in assists (304) and assists per game (9.8), setting single-season 'Cuse and ACC records in both categories.
Â
The Orange begin the 2018-19 slate Tuesday, Nov. 6, when they host North Dakota at 3 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
