Women slotted second
The Syracuse men's cross country team is again picked as the favorite in the region, after winning eight of the last nine NCAA Northeast Regionals.
The USTFCCCA released their preseason regional rankings, with the 'Cuse men projected at the top of the standings. The Orange women are picked second in the region behind Providence after taking third in the NCAA Northeast Regional last season.
The Orange men, which have won five regional titles in a row heading into 2018, returns five men with NCAA Championship experience – Iliass Aouani, Joe Dragon, Dom Hockenbury and Aidan Tooker from 2017 and Kevin James from 2016 – plus track All-American Noah Affolder to a roster that will add a highly touted recruiting class to the mix.
Following the top-ranked Orange is Iona, Stony Brook, Providence and Boston University to round out the men's top-five.
The women are set to be led by a pair of All-Region performers from a year ago in Shannon Malone and Madeleine Davison. Five of the seven women who competed at last year's NCAA Championships will be back as well, in Malone, Davison, Rachel Bonner, Eva Scott and Maggie Toczko. Â
Providence, who won the NCAA Northeast Regional last season, was picked to win the women's title again. 'Cuse, Dartmouth, Yale and Cornell comprise the next-four spots.
The USTFCCCA's preseason national rankings will be released at 2 p.m. on Tuesday. Syracuse will open its 2018 slate on Saturday at the Harry Lang Invitational, at 11:30 a.m. at Colgate.
