It took extra time once again, but the No. 15 Syracuse field hockey team (9-5, 1-3 ACC) used a strong defensive effort and fought to victory over No. 3 UConn (13-3) in strokes. It's the sixth time Syracuse has gone to overtime this season and has come away victorious in all six.
The teams played to a 0-0 draw after two overtime periods, leaving the game to be decided in a shootout. Claire Webb and Charlotte de Vries both finished the first two opportunities for the Orange, while Sarah Sinck maintained the clean sheet stopping all-four UConn attempts to seal the win.
"I'm so incredibly proud of the of the resilience, grit and passion our team played with today," said head coach Ange Bradley. "To bounce back after Friday's loss and find a way to endure is special. Their love and passion for competing and taking on a challenge really shined today."
Sarah Sinck was stellar in cage for 'Cuse, tying her career high with 11 saves. The Huskies controlled most of the scoring chances on the day, out-shooting the Orange 24-8 and coming away with 13 corners to Syracuse's one. But the defense withstood the pressure and Sinck made nine saves after halftime to lead 'Cuse to victory.
Next, Syracuse holds its final home weekend at J.S. Coyne Stadium of the regular season. On Friday, No. 20 Wake Forest visits 'Cuse for a 7 p.m. game that'll be televised on ACC Network Extra. Sunday will be Senior Day, when local foe Cornell heads north to take on the Orange. That game will also be on ACC Network Extra and is set to begin at 2 p.m.
