
No. 14 Orange Lose to No. 16 Stanford

Berkeley, Calif. – Syracuse field hockey moved to 8-3 overall with a loss to No. 16 Stanford (7-5) on Saturday night. The Orange led 2-1 but two goals by the Cardinal in the final five minutes handed 'Cuse its third loss of the season. Claire Cooke and Sarah Luby both scored for Syracuse.
Syracuse got on the board first when Claire Cooke took the ball into the circle and scored unassisted in the 22nd minute. Lynn Vanderstichele scored four minutes later to even the game at 1-1 before halftime.
Five minutes into the second half Luby scored, unassisted. It was the second goal in as many days for the junior. The Orange held the lead through the third quarter and led 2-1 at the start of the fourth quarter.
Sarah Johnson found Frances Carstens in the 57th minute to even the game at 2-all. With under a minute to play in regulation, Stanford's Alderton stole a pass in the circle and scored making it 3-2.
Stanford edged Syracuse 11-9 in shots and 4-2 in saves but the Orange had three penalty corners to Stanford's two.
'Cuse returns home to host No. 1 North Carolina, the nation's only remaining undefeated team, on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 1 p.m. The Orange welcome back all Syracuse field hockey alumnae and their families for Family Day and Field Hockey Fights Cancer.
