Bell Earns ACC Coach of the Year
12/9/2019 9:35:00 PM | Cross Country
Brien Bell guided his team to an ACC Championship and has been named ACC Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year.
Bell's coaching led 'Cuse to capture the conference title in one of the deepest men's fields in recent memory without their top runner. Aidan Tooker – who was expected to be Syracuse's top performer this year – was sidelined due to injury. In his absence, Bell's squad rallied to help the Orange win their first conference title under his watch.
Six different members of the Orange earned All-ACC honors: Noah Beveridge, Joe Dragon, Nathan Henderson, Dominic Hockenbury, Kevin James and Nathan Lawler, by posting top-20 finishes at the meet.
Trailing at 4k and tied at 6k, the Syracuse men's cross country team used a gutsy performance over the final 2,000-meters to claim the program's sixth ACC title in its seven seasons in the conference. The Orange edged Notre Dame by five points and had a 32 point lead over Virginia Tech and Virginia for the win.
Bell brings home the sixth ACC cross country coach of the year honor for Syracuse, following on the heels of Chris Fox earning the honor five times. Bell took over for Fox prior to the start of the 2018 season and led the Orange men to their sixth ACC Championship this fall.
The Orange went on to be runner up of the NCAA Northeast Regional, earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships, where they finished 27th.
Bell and the Syracuse track and field teams will continue action in January.
