Syracuse, N.Y. – Is Tiana Mangakahia the best point guard in the Atlantic Coast Conference? On Monday, she was named one of 10 candidates for the 2019 Nancy Lieberman Award, which recognizes the top point guard in NCAA Division I women's college basketball. Mangakahia is the only Atlantic Coast Conference point guard on the list.
Piggybacking off a breakout season a year ago, Mangakahia is averaging 15 points, 8.2 assists and 4.8 rebounds per game. She has had a hand in 45.6 percent of the Orange's offense this season, including averaging 20.5 points per game in points and assists. She ranks second in the nation in assists per game and third in total assists (198). The junior also leads the ACC in both categories and free throw percentage (.886).
To be considered for this prestigious award, candidates exhibit the floor leadership, play-making and ball-handling skills of Class of 1996 Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman. A national committee comprising top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates in October and narrowed the list to 10 this week. In March, five finalists will be presented to Ms. Lieberman and the Hall of Fame's selection committee. Fans will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite finalist online.
