
Mangakahia is a Nancy Lieberman Award Finalist

Springfield, Mass. – Syracuse point guard Tiana Mangakahia is one of five finalists for the 2019 Nancy Lieberman Award which recognizes the top point guard in women's NCAA Division I college basketball. To be considered for the award, candidates exhibit the floor leadership, play-making and ball-handling skills of Class of 1996 Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman.
Mangakahia is the only Atlantic Coast Conference point guard on the five-player list which includes last year's winner Sabrina Ionescu (Oregon), Crystal Dangerfield (UConn), Tyasha Harris (South Carolina) and Destiny Slocum (Oregon State).
"The five finalists for this year's award are truly incredible and a testament to how far the game has come," said Nancy Lieberman, Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 1996. "I'm blessed to have been a part of paving the way for women in the game and I look forward to watching these young women compete for a championship in the coming weeks."
Mangakahia leads the Orange with 16.7 points and 8.4 assists per game this season. She is a ACC-All Conference First Team and All-Tournament First Team Selection as well as a four-time ACC Player of the Week. She leads the nation in total assists (268) and is second in assists per game. Mangakahia also leads the ACC in free throw percentage (.876) and is third in free throws made (12), fourth in assist/turnover ratio (2.14), total points (534), steals (69), steals per game (2.16) and ninth in free throw attempts (137).
She is eighth in the league in points per game and has a hand in 48.5 percent of Syracuse's offense each game between points and assists. She recorded the first points, rebounds and assists triple double in program history on Jan. 13 with 34 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in a 90-77 win over North Carolina. The Brisbane, Australia, native tied a career-high 44 points shooting 16-for-20 from the field in a win at No. 22 Florida State on Feb. 28, the first victory in Tallahassee in program history.
Mangakahia is the second Syracuse point guard to be named a Lieberman Award finalist in the last three years. Alexis Peterson '17, was the first in program history after averaging 23.4 points and 7.0 assists per game during the 2016-17 season.
Syracuse reached the ACC Tournament semifinals for the third time in six years where the Orange lost to eventual tournament champion Notre Dame. The Orange now focus their attention to the NCAA Tournament and will find will find out if the road to the Final Four begins at the Carrier Dome during the NCAA Women's Basketball Selection Show on Monday, March 18 at 7 p.m.
