Orange Announce 2019 Slate
7/30/2019 1:57:00 PM | Cross Country
Following a successful campaign that saw the 'Cuse women tie their best finish at an ACC Championship meet ever, both the Orange men and women's cross country teams return the majority of their championship roster for a 2019 slate that shapes up similar to the past few seasons.
Syracuse will compete in four of the five regular season meets from a year ago, before heading to Blacksburg, Virginia for this year's ACC Championship. The NCAA Northeast Regional returns to the course where the men's team successfully defended their title in Buffalo last season and recent grad Shannon Malone earned the individual title. Terre Haute, Indiana will again serve as the NCAA Championship site.
Syracuse opens the season at the Harry Lang Invitational, where both teams have swept the meet for the past nine seasons, on Sept. 7. The winners of the 2018 races, Nathan Henderson and Abigail Spiers, will both be returning to SU this season.
On Sept. 20, the Orange will head to the Battle of Beantown, an invitational hosted by Boston College. Syracuse has performed very well at this race historically, with both the men's and women's teams posting top-ten team finishes in the past two years. The men are aiming to win the event for the third time in a row.
Another familiar course awaits for 'Cuse on Oct. 18, when the teams will head to the Nuttycombe Wisconson Invitational. Syracuse has ran this course annually since 2013, although last year the event was replaced with NCAA Pre-Nationals. At Pre-Nats last year, Aidan Tooker came in second overall and powered the men's team to a third place finish. Tooker will return to the course this year as a senior. In her collegiate cross country debut, Laura Dickenson was the Orange's top finisher at Wisconsin last year, finishing with a time of 20:52.2.
The last competition of the regular season, the John Reif Memorial, will take place on Oct. 25 at Cornell.
Virginia Tech will host the ACC Championships this year, taking place on Nov. 1. The Syracuse men will be looking to earn their seventh conference championship in eight seasons. They were the ACC runner up in 2018, losing to Notre Dame by just four points. Four All-ACC performers (Aidan Tooker, Joe Dragon, Kevin James and Nathan Henderson) are returning to the team this year. The women's squad came in third last year, which was their best finish in a conference championship since 1982. Shannon Malone led the team by finishing fifth overall last year, followed up by Laura Dickinson and Rachel Bonner, who each return this year.

Two weeks later, both teams will head down the Thruway to Buffalo to compete in the NCAA Northeast Regional. The men have won this event every year since 2013. The women will try to improve from their sixth place finish last year.
The NCAA Championships will take place on Nov. 23 in Terre Haute, Indiana. The event was last run there in 2016, where Justyn Knight finished second overall and the men's team turned in a third-place finish.
