Junior Laura Graziosi scored in the 53rd minute to lift Syracuse's field hockey team past Duke, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon in Virginia Beach, Va. The Orange earn their first win of the season and improve to 1-2 overall. Duke is now 0-4 and continues its six-game losing streak. Florine van Boetzelaer scored twice for the Orange and Charlotte de Vries tallied her first goal of the season in the win.Â
Duke scored in the fourth minute when Hannah Miller scored unassisted for a 1-0 lead. Van Boetzelaer evened the game at 10:55 when she slipped a rebound past Piper Hampsch for her first of two goals. In the final minute of the first quarter de Vries scored on a cross from SJ Quigley to give the Orange their first lead of the game.Â
Miller scored her second goal in the 17th minute to even things at 2-2 for the remainder of the first half. Syracuse had an 8-6 advantage in shots on Duke while both teams had two corner opportunities each.Â
Syracuse took a 3-2 lead in the 43rd minute on van Boetzelaer's second goal, assisted by Claire Cooke. Fifty-nine seconds later the Blue Devils tied it once more on a Alayna Burns goal.Â
With under eight minutes to play Graziosi scored off a rebounded save to give the Orange their third and final lead of the game. Syd Taylor made three saves in goal in her first win of the season as the Syracuse goalkeeper.Â
Van Boetzelaer becomes the first multi-goal scorer of the season for Syracuse and leads the team with three goals in three games. De Vries and Graziosi both scored their first goals of the season and Quigley now has a goal and two assists, good for second on the team in points.Â
The Orange have won each of the last two meetings between Syracuse and Duke by one-goal.
'Cuse hits the road for a trio of games next weekend. The Orange open things up against North Carolina on Friday, Oct. 16. Following Friday's tilt with the Tar Heels in Chapel Hill, Syracuse will head to Winston-Salem, N.C., for a Saturday, Sunday doubleheader against Wake Forest.Â
