Chapel Hill, N.C. – For fifty-two minutes the scoreboard had a pair of zeroes at Karen Shelton Stadium on Friday night. In the 53rd minute North Carolina scored on a penalty corner eventually handing the Syracuse field hockey team their second ACC loss of the season. The Orange move to 1-3 overall and will travel head west down Interstate 40 in North Carolina to face Wake Forest on Sunday and Monday. Both games are scheduled for noon on ACCNX with Sunday's game serving as a conference game.
"I am incredibly proud of our team's effort tonight," Syracuse head coach Ange Bradley said. "We are growing and I am excited to see what we can become."
Syracuse goalkeeper Syd Taylor had a strong performance and was backed by a Syracuse defense that helped keep the Tar Heels off the scoreboard on five of their six corner opportunities and fanned two situations where they were down a player due to cards.
While both teams were serving offsetting yellow cards in the fourth quarter, Carolina was awarded a penalty corner. At 52:02 in the game Erin Matson scored up the middle off the corner to give UNC the 1-0 lead.
The Tar Heels held a 6-3 advantage in penalty corners and outshot the Orange 9-6. The two teams combined for just three shots on goal, two of which belonged to 'Cuse.
The Orange have played four games thus far in the season: three in ACC play and one non-conference game against Virginia. All four games have been one-goal games with Syracuse defeating Duke while losing to both Virginia and North Carolina 1-0 in conference. Syracuse's win over Duke was a 4-3 victory at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex, the regional home for the U.S. Women's National Team, on Oct. 11.
