SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse freshman Deandre Kerr scored the first two goals of his career in a 2-2 tie against Louisville in men's soccer action on Friday, Oct. 16. The Orange led, 2-0, but allowed a pair of goals in the final 13 minutes of regulation.
Â
"Tonight was difficult for us and we have a very frustrated group," said Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre. "Credit to Louisville, who found a way to get back into it. I think we showed a little naivety tonight. I think we thought the game was over when it was 2-0. They scored 90 seconds after we made it 2-0. We gave them a way back in and they scored another three minutes later. We had some good moments, but we left some points on the table."
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Orange (0-2-1, 0-2-1) were the more dangerous team throughout the first half and broke through in the 42nd minute. The ball was played long out of Syracuse's defensive end to Kerr, who beat his defender and fired his shot from just inside the box to give the 'Cuse its first lead of the season.
Â
Syracuse had a chance to add to its lead in the 52nd minute when Louisville goalkeeper Osmar Chavero was given a red card and the Orange were awarded a penalty kick. Senior Luther Archimede took the PK, but William Howard, who had just entered the game, made the save.
Â
Kerr found the back of the net for a second time in the 77th minute. Junior Hilli Goldhar crossed the ball into the box and Kerr found the back of the net to extend the lead to 2-0.
Â
Louisville (1-3-1, 1-1-1) answered less than minutes later when Nico Diaz scored on an assist from Carlos Sanchis. The Cardinals tied the score off a corner kick in the 81st minute, forcing overtime.
Â
Syracuse controlled possession in the extra sessions and its best chance came in the final minute when it earned a corner kick. The ball was played out to sophomore Amferny Sinclair, who put a shot on goal from 30 yards out, but Howard made a leaping save, giving the 'Cuse another corner. The Orange couldn't get off a shot as the clock ran down and the teams tied for the third straight meeting.
