
Orange Lose to Virginia in Double Overtime

Charlottesville, Va. – Syracuse erased a two-goal deficit in the second half to force overtime on Sunday afternoon, but a Cavalier goal in double overtime handed the Orange their second loss of the season. SJ Quigley led the team with three points scoring the first 'Cuse goal of the season and assisted on Florine van Boetzelaer's first-career goal. Syracuse moves to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Sunday's 3-2 loss was a non-conference game.
Virginia scored in the 13th minute of the game to take a 1-0 lead when Adele Iacobucci deflected the ball in off a UVA corner. The Cavaliers out-shot the Orange 4-1 in the first quarter added six more shots in the second quarter, including Amber Ezechiels' goal off a corner.
Syracuse trailed 2-0 heading into halftime and Virginia out-shot the Orange 10-3.
Quigley scored first for 'Cuse in the 35th minute when her second chance shot off the rebound found the back of the cage. Virginia held a one goal lead, 2-1, going into the final frame. In the 50th minute, van Boetzelaer tied the game when she knocked it in from the left side. Quigley picked up her first assist of the year on the goal.
The two teams battled through the end of regulation and Syracuse headed to its first overtime period of the season. The Orange made some big defensive stops in the first overtime. In the 76th minute Ezechiels scored on an assist by Makayla Gallen to end the game.
Virginia led 24-17 in shots and held a slight 8-5 advantage in corners. Syd Taylor made four saves in goal for the Orange and Eefke van den Nieuwenhof made her first career defensive save for a team total five saves.
Syracuse begins its home season with the latest home opener in program history on Saturday, Oct. 11 when the Orange take on Boston College at 12 pm at J.S. Coyne Stadium.
