Vestri and Trojan win performer, Connelly and Sam Lawler earn rookie awards
Strong starts from both teams last weekend earned 'Cuse its first Atlantic Coast Conference weekly awards of the season. The Orange secured a sweep of four total awards this week- ACC Cross Country Performer of the Week and Rookie of the Week for both the men and women.
Redshirt senior and transfer JP Trojan and senior Amanda Vestri earned ACC Men's and Women's Cross Country Performer of the Week, respectively, for their first place performances at Army last weekend. True freshmen Sam Lawler and Sarah Connelly were awarded ACC Men's and Women's Cross Country Rookie of the Week, respectively, for their strong performances at the meet.
The ACC only honors true freshman for Rookie of the Week honors, redshirt freshmen are not eligible.
Trojan had an impressive debut for the Orange, finishing in first place at Army on Saturday, with a 7.5k time of 22:46.6. The redshirt senior was the leading scorer at William & Mary last year, finishing first on the team in each of his five races. He was named CAA Runner of the Week three times in the 2019 season. Trojan's performance on Saturday led his team to a dominate first-place finish, with the 'Cuse runners factoring in the scoring sweeping the top spaces.
Vestri, who transferred from Iowa State to Syracuse last season, also won her race outright, with a time of 16:42.2 in the 3-mile women's race at Army last weekend. She led her teammates to a second-place finish, with three scorers finishing in the Top 5.
Connelly finished fourth overall and second for the Orange in the women's race with a time of 17:43.2, while Sam Lawler finished 13th overall with a time of 23:32.9 in the men's meet to earn Rookie of the Week honors in their collegiate debuts.
