The Syracuse men's rowing Championship Eight+ and Championship Four+ crews had a strong showing at the Head of the Charles Regatta on Sunday afternoon in Cambridge, Mass. It was the first of two races for the Orange this fall after a long semester of training. The Orange next race a full squad at the Princeton Chase on Sunday, Nov. 7.Â
"I thought both the 8+ and 4+ raced very well," said head coach Dave Reischman. "The Charles is a race that has a lot of distractions and I thought we did a good job of keeping our focus on our own boat speed. I thought the results were indicative of the good work our entire team has been doing this fall."Â
The Championship 4+ earned a seventh place finish overall and was fifth among college crews in the race. Guided by coxswain Mark Ezaki, the Orange crew of Alex DeGrado, Ryan Elsinga, Max Moltzan and Isaac Evans finished behind three Ivy League crews (Dartmouth, Cornell, Princeton) and FIT, and ahead of Brown, Oregon State, Wisconsin, who rounded out the top-10 in the race. The top two crews in the Championship 4+ race were from USTC-Oakland.Â
In the Championship 8+, Syracuse finished top-five behind winner Washington, Dartmouth, Yale and Harvard. The Orange crew comprised of coxswain Bricen Nygaard and powered by Laurence Joss, Arnaud Buard, Benjamin Dukes, Nicholas Kohl, Joe Willis, Lachlan Doust, Jacopo Bertone and Emory Sammons edged Brown's 4+ by just over two seconds and were just over a second behind Harvard at the finish.Â
