Women's Basketball Begins 2021-22 Campaign Wednesday
11/9/2021 9:48:00 PM | Women's Basketball
The Syracuse women's basketball team will have an entirely new look when they take the court to begin the 2021-22 season on Wednesday night at the Carrier Dome. Both Syracuse and its opponent, Monmouth, will have first-time head coaches on guiding their teams for the 7 p.m. tip-off on ACCNX.
Acting Head Coach Vonn Read takes the reigns after serving as the team's Associate Head Coach the last few seasons. Read constructed Syracuse's system that helped the Orange reach the NCAA championship game in 2016. 'Cuse welcomed nine new players, seven by way of the transfer portal, to The Hill this offseason including two former Freshman of the Year honorees from their respective conferences (Chrislyn Carr, Big 12 & Alaina Rice, MEAC) as well as the 2021 MEAC Player of the Year, Jayla Thornton. Syracuse returns just one starter from a season ago, Priscilla Williams, who averaged 8.7 points and 3.2 assists in 21 starts last season. She tallied a season-high 26 points against Miami and tied a program record for three-pointers in a game (8) against Lincoln on Dec. 2.Â
Monmouth, led by first-year head coach Ginny Boggess, returns nearly all of the 2020-21 roster and added two freshman and three transfers in Stella Clark (Northeastern), Kaci Donovan (Penn State) and Kayla Richardson (La Salle). Monmouth's Preseason Third Team All-MAAC selection Belle Kranbuhl returns for a sophomore season after posting 7.2 points and a team-best 8.0 rebounds per game as a freshman last year.Â
Wednesday night is just the second meeting in program history between the two teams. The first meeting was a WNIT first round meeting in the Carrier Dome on March, 17, 2011 where Syracuse won 77-53.Â
Fans can watch Wednesday night's game live on ACCNX with Ben Shulman and Jaron May on the call.Â
Syracuse will host Notre Dame on Sunday, Nov. 14 for its Atlantic Coast Conference opener. Game time is set for noon on ACC Network. At halftime of Sunday's game, Syracuse Athletics will officially retire Felisha Legette-Jack's jersey to the Carrier Dome rafters as the first female student-athlete at Syracuse to have their jersey retired.Â
50 YEARS OF SYRACUSE WOMEN'S ATHLETICS
Orange alumni, fans and friends are invited to share in a year-long celebration of 50 years of Syracuse University women's athletics. Events and special recognition of all female student-athletes who have donned the Block S to represent Syracuse University and the Athletics Department since 1971-72 will be held throughout the 2021-22 seasons. As we celebrate this history, we acknowledge those who have gone before us to set the standard we strive to achieve today so we can pave the way for the future. We reflect on the history of women in sport, admire their sacrifices, recognize their contributions and accomplishments, and honor their legacy.
