LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Syracuse senior Simon Triantafillou scored on a penalty kick in the 76th minute but it wasn't enough as Louisville defeated Syracuse, 3-1, in men's soccer action on Friday, March 12.
Â
"For long periods of time we played some really good soccer on the road in a competitive ACC game," said Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre. "There were long stretches where we looked good, moved the ball well and asked questions of Louisville. I cannot ask for more effort and commitment from our guys. Physically we left everything on the field and I could not be more proud of the hard work the guys put into this game. Having said that, we lost 3-1. We have nothing to show for our endeavor and fight. We're working so hard to score and create chances that we gifted some goals to Louisville."
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cardinals (4-5-1) took the early lead when Nico Diaz scored in the 11th minute. Louisville extended the advantage in the 32nd minute when Elijah Amo served the ball into the box to Aboubacar Camara, who was making a run to goal. Camara found the back of the net with his shot to give UofL a 2-0 lead at the break.
Â
Syracuse created several scoring chances after intermission and broke through when freshman Deandre Kerr was taken down in the box in the 76th minute. Triantafillou converted on the penalty kick to cut the deficit in half.
Â
The Orange (1-6-3) continued to send numbers forward and nearly recorded the equalizer in the 78th minute, but Kerr's shot went off the crossbar. Louisville added an insurance goal in the 89th minute on a goal by Carlos Sanchis for the 3-1 final.
Â
OF NOTE
Syracuse outshot Louisville, 17-9, and earned 11 corner kicks to just two for the Cardinals. Orange goalkeeper Russell Shealy finished with three saves.
Â
"It was a frustrating evening and there are no short cuts and quick answers. It's a very steep learning curve but I'm convinced we're going to get there," McIntyre said. "Right now we have to bounce back to welcome North Carolina next week
