CLEMSON, S.C. – Syracuse opened the spring portion of its ACC schedule with a 3-1 loss at No. 1 Clemson on Sunday, March 7. The Tigers scored two unanswered goals to break a 1-1 tie and record the victory.
Â
"I thought for stretches tonight we did some good things," said Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre. "It's a tough place to play against a tough team, ACC champs. There are a lot of positives to take from the game, but we conceded five minutes in, five minutes after we scored, and five minutes after halftime. You are going to get punished against a team like Clemson and it's an area we need to improve. Our response after we went down 3-1 was terrific. We pushed and got some big performances from our veterans and our new guys. I see enough to know we're not that far away and if we keep training well, the results will come."
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Clemson (9-2-1, 1-0) took the lead in the sixth minute. Orange goalkeeper Russell Shealy stopped Isaiah Reid's initial shot, but Reid collected the rebound and put his shot in the back of the net.
Â
Syracuse (1-5-3, 0-1) evened the match in the 10th minute when senior Simon Triantafillou crossed the ball to the left side to sophomore Noah Singelmann, who recorded his team-leading third goal of the year. However, the Tigers answered less than three minutes later on a goal by Callum Johnson to again take the lead.
Â
Johnson added an insurance goal in the 50th minute to extend Clemson's advantage to 3-1. Syracuse continued to send numbers forward and created scoring chances, but couldn't take advantage of its opportunities. The Orange's best chance came when freshman Jack Coleman shed his defender in the final third but his shot went just wide.
Â
OF NOTE
Shealy finished with four saves. Clemson outshot Syracuse, 16-9, while the Orange earned six corner kicks to two for the Tigers.
Â
Singelmann continues to lead the 'Cuse offense this spring. In four matches, he has two goals and two assists. Singelmann now leads the squad in points (9), goals (3) and assists (3).
Â
The ACC returns to its Atlantic and Coastal Divisions this spring after using a North and South format last fall. The match was the first for both clubs to count toward the Atlantic Division standings. Clemson was also playing its first match since winning the ACC Tournament last November.
Â
UP NEXT
The Orange are back in action on Friday, March 12 at Louisville at 7 p.m.
