4/14/2021 11:56:00 AM | Ice Hockey
Syracuse University ice hockey alumna Allie Munroe is one of 47 players who will participate in Hockey Canada's 2021 BFL National Women's Team Selection Camp from April 15 through April 21 in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Â
Munroe, who played at Syracuse from 2015 through 2019, currently plays for Djurgårdens IF in the Swedish Women's Hockey League (SDHL), which is the top-flight of Swedish's women's hockey and is based in Stockholm, Sweden. Munroe was a co-captain for the 2019 Syracuse team that won the College Hockey America Championship and earned the program's first NCAA Tournament invitation. The two-time CHA Best Defenseman Award winner (2017 and 2019) was a 2019 All-CHA First Team selection after leading Syracuse and all CHA defensemen in points (27), assists (22) and blocks (73). In 2016, Munroe attended the Canadian National Women's Development Team selection camps and the program's strength and conditioning camp.
Â
The Team Canada coaching staff will use the selection camp as the final opportunity to evaluate the players in preparation for the 2021 IIHF Women's World Championship, May 6-16 in Halifax and Truro, N.S. The week-long camp includes practices and three intra-squad games at the Scotiabank Centre, which will take place in a secure self-isolation environment that is closed to both the public and media. Hockey Canada has worked extensively with the Province of Nova Scotia and Nova Scotia Public Health to ensure the health and safety of all participants and the community at large. Staff and players will continue to follow strict COVID-19 testing as per health and safety protocols that have been detailed and approved by Nova Scotia Public Health. Â
Â
Canada will begin its quest for a gold medal when it opens the 2021 IIHF Women's World Championship against Finland on May 6 at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT. Canada will also play Russia, Switzerland and the United States in preliminary-round action.
Â
Canada has captured 10 gold medals at the IIHF Women's World Championship (1990, 1992, 1994, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2007, 2012), in addition to eight silver (2005, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017) and one bronze (2019).
