SYRACUSE, N.Y. – A stellar showing from Meaghan Tyrrell powered No. 3/3 Syracuse (15-3) past No. 9/11 Loyola (12-3) by a score of 20-8 in the second round of the 2021 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship on Sunday afternoon in the Carrier Dome.
"We're happy that we were able to step on the field, pick up where we left off, and give a full-team effort," said Syracuse head coach Gary Gait. "I thought that everyone played well and that the players that we needed to step up stepped up. I'm happy with the win."
Meaghan Tyrrell's team-best seven goals tied her career-high and set a program-record for an NCAA Tournament contest, surpassing Alyssa Murray's six-goal total from 2014 against Virginia. Her sister, Emma Tyrrell, contributed four goals to the Orange offense while Sam Swart secured a hat trick. The Tyrrell sisters tied for the squad-high in assists with three apiece.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The teams traded pairs of goals before the 'Cuse catapulted ahead with four goals in a three-minute stretch that was bookended with scores by Emma Tyrrell to make the Syracuse lead 6-2 with 18:08 remaining in the opening frame.
The Orange outscored the Greyhounds 7-2 over the remainder of the period and closed the final seven minutes of the half on a 4-0 run to take a 13-4 lead at the break.

A nine-minute scoring stretch ensued before Catie Corolla found the back of the net for the Greyhounds. Not to be outdone, the Orange opened up a 4-0 run that featured two goals from Emma Tyrrell to climb ahead 19-7.
