ORANGE UPDATE
A standout performance from junior attack Meaghan Tyrrell propelled Syracuse (15-3) to victory against Loyola in the Carrier Dome on Sunday. After the teams traded pairs of goals to open the game, the Orange erupted for five unanswered goals over a 10-minute stretch and would not relinquish their lead for the remainder of the contest en route to a 20-8 victory. The win improved Syracuse's all-time record in the NCAA Tournament to 19-17.
Â
Tyrrell tallied team-highs in goals (7) and points (10), each of which matched career highs set at Louisville this season on April 16. Her seven goals are the most by a Syracuse player in an NCAA Tournament contest, besting Alyssa Murray's six-goal total against Virginia in 2014. Tyrrell's point total ties her with Murray for the third-most points in program history in a tournament game. Murray met the mark against Dartmouth in 2013.
Â
Sophomore attack Emma Tyrrell joined her sister with an impressive performance of her own, scoring four goals and dishing out three assists. Her seven points are tied for the sixth-most by a Syracuse player in a tournament contest.
Â
SCOUTING THE GATORS
Since losing to Jacksonville in a non-conference matchup on March 13, Florida has won 15 straight games, tying a program-record. The last time the Gators reached that feat was in 2012, Syracuse snapped the streak in the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament with a 14-13 win in double overtime. The 2021 team's only other loss came in its second contest of the season against No. 1 North Carolina.
Â
The Gators own an 18-2 overall record and defeated Temple, 19-4, to claim their second-straight American Athletic Conference title. In the NCAA Tournament, Florida foiled Mercer by a 23-5 margin and avenged its loss against Jacksonville by defeating the Dolphins 17-3.
Â
Senior midfielder Shannon Kavanagh leads the Gators in both points (95) and goals (76). The third-leading goal scorer in program history ranks fourth in the nation in total goals and eighth in the country in total points. In addition to Kavanagh, redshirt senior attack Brianna Harris has also given the Gators 90+ points (47G, 43A) this season. Her assist total ranks ninth in the nation while her point total (90) ranks 10th in the country. The team's third-leading scorer, senior attack Grace Haus, has scored 62 goals this season, good for 10th in the nation.
Â
The Gators have also received stellar play from one of the top goalkeepers in the country this season. Redshirt freshman Sarah Reznick leads Division I in both goals-against average (5.81) and save percentage (.587).
Â
Amanda O'Leary is in her 12th year at the helm in Gainesville. She owns a record of 185-47 while guiding the Gators and a 347-112 overall record, having coached Yale for 14 seasons before taking over at Florida.
Â
THE SERIES
The Orange own a 7-4 advantage in the all-time series against the Gators. The teams last met March of 2019, when a goal from Meaghan Tyrrell with eight seconds remaining pushed Syracuse past Florida, 14-13. The squads have met twice in the NCAA Tournament. In the 2012 semifinals, the Orange defeated the Gators in double overtime. Syracuse claimed a 13-9 victory in the 2013 quarterfinals.
