The 11th-ranked Syracuse University women's rowing team is one of 22 that will compete in the 2021 NCAA Championship. The Orange earned an at-large invitation to the event for the fourth time in five racing seasons (2016, 2017, 2018 and 2021; 2020 season canceled due to COVID-19).
Â
"We are obviously really excited to earn an invitation," said head coach Luke McGee. "It has been a tremendous year. It has been a challenging year for everybody, but the work they have done and the commitment they have shown has been phenomenal to get to this point. We certainly expect a lot of hard racing against a lot of great teams and a lot of great athletes.
Â
The 2021 NCAA Championship appearance will be the ninth for the Syracuse program, including the fifth as a team (2002, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2021). Four varsity eight boats have earned individual invitations (1997, 2000, 2001 and 2005). The last NCAA Championship for the Orange was in 2018 when Syracuse finished 16th as a team. The 2021 NCAA Championship will be held May 28-30 at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Fla.
Â
"From where we were last March when everything was shut down to right now is a really sweet moment, especially for the seniors and especially the fifth-year seniors – Madeleine Holzman-Klima, Maddy Horridge and Lucy Pearce – this is why they came back," McGee said. "This is a great opportunity that they have earned through their hard work."
Â
Syracuse most recently finished third at the 2021 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). All five Orange boats finished in the top three for the first time since the Orange joined the ACC in 2014. Third-ranked Virginia won the ACC title by winning all five races to score 99 points, while 17th-ranked Duke finished second with 84 points. The Orange scored 81 points. Since Syracuse joined the ACC in 2013-14, the Orange has placed in the top three every year, finishing second twice and third five times.
Â
Senior Meg Varcoe earned All-ACC First Team honors and fifth-year senior Lucy Pearce earned All-ACC Second Team recognition.
