Orange Dominate in Season Opener

The Syracuse men's and women's cross country teams both claimed sound victories at the Harry Lang Invitational hosted by Colgate in the season opener on Saturday. The men's squad had the top five finishers, while the women's team claimed six of the top seven spots.
Freshman Kevin Robertson won the men's race with a time of 19:39.5, while fellow frosh Ethan Wechsler was right behind at 19:44.2. Senior Jack Whetstone placed third at 19:52.0, followed by sophomore Nathan Lawler (20:03.5) and junior Matthew Dragon (20:33.8). The Orange compiled 15 points to 40 for Colgate.
On the women's side, freshman Olivia Joly finished second in the 4,800-meter race with a time of 18:58.2. Sophomore Emily Nugent placed third with a time of 18:31.3, followed by freshman Maddie Heintz (18:35.3) and junior Siobhan O'Keefe (18:58.2). Freshman Bethan Steiner placed sixth (19:02.5), to give the Orange 20 points compared to 40 for the Raiders. In addition, freshman Caroline Kirby while was seventh (19:08.7) and junior Laura Dickinson was 11th (19:31.0). Colgate's Sophia Manners won the women's race with a time of 18:03.2.
The Orange return to action on Friday, Sept. 10 at the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational hosted by Penn State.
