Johnson and Thompson Garner CHA Honors
11/7/2022 1:00:00 PM | Ice Hockey
Juniors Hannah Johnson and Sarah Thompson are the College Hockey America Defenseman and Forward of the Week, respectively, for their performance in a weekend sweep of Lindenwood. Both Johnson and Thompson are regulars on Syracuse's power play and penalty kill units. The Orange rank seventh nationally in power play goals and are tied for first in shorthanded goals.
Â
Johnson scored the first goal in each game to jumpstart the Orange offense. The Readfield, Maine native blocked eight shots and had nine shots on goal in the two games. In the 4-1 win on Friday, Johnson scored a power play goal less than five minutes into the contest when she one-timed the rebound save from Hicks' shot into the right side of the goal.
Â
On Saturday, Johnson started the game the same way she began the series opener, scoring in the first five minutes of the game to give the Orange a 1-0 lead en route to a 4-3 victory. The Readfield, Maine native waited for the puck to come loose from a group of players on the Lindenwood crease, corralled the puck when it popped out of the group and put it in the right side the net for the unassisted goal.
Â
Johnson is tied for first in the CHA in blocks with 26 this season and has three goals and two assists for five points.
Â
Thompson, who was involved in all four Syracuse goals in the 4-1 win on Friday, tallying assists on three, had 26 faceoff wins, six shots and two blocks in the series.
Â
On Friday, Thompson set up Johnson's first goal with a pass to Hicks. She then assisted on sophomore Madison Primeau's second and third goals of the game. On the first, Thompson centered a pass from the left goal line which Primeau controlled and then fired a shot from between the circles to give Syracuse a 3-1 lead with four minutes remaining int the second period. Four minutes into the third period, Thompson carried the puck toward the goal where Primeau picked it up on the crease to put it in the back of the net to give the Orange a 4-1 lead and secure Primeau' hat-trick. The three assists are a career-high for Thompson, who has 10 helpers in her Syracuse career.
Â
Thompson has tallied eight goals, 10 assists and 168 faceoff wins in 64 games for the Orange.
Â
The Orange (5-7-1 overall, 4-0 CHA) will play a series at #15 Princeton on Friday, November 11 and Saturday, November 12. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.
