Orange Finish Second at ACC Championship
5/14/2022 3:00:00 PM | Women's Rowing
The varsity eight and second varsity eight crews both came within two seconds of first-place Virginia to propel the 11th-ranked Syracuse women's rowing team to a second-place finish at the 2022 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship on Saturday, May 14. The second-place finishes by the top boats earned 56 points combined for the Orange and put them one point ahead of third-place Duke. The Orange scored 83 points, behind 16th-ranked Virginia (98), which won the conference title for the 20th time, and ahead of 14th-ranked Duke (82). It is the third time in the last five ACC Championships that Syracuse has finished second. The Orange also tied for second in 2016.
Â
Varsity eight rowers junior Aphrodite Gioulekas and sophomore Kamile Kralikaite earned ACC First Team honors and varsity eight coxswain junior Hannah Murphy earned ACC Second Team honors.
Â
"Everybody raced really hard races," said head coach Luke McGee. "They all put it out there and gave it their full measure and raced hard all the way down the course. We ran up against some really strong competition. For us to be within a couple seconds of Virginia in the first and second varsity eights speaks to the fact that we are building something and that we are coming along as a team. The team is hungry for more. Last year if you talked to us and we had finished second we would have been elated. This year we took second and we are a little disappointed because we have that belief in ourselves that we can go in and win it. That is good. To have that perspective is what we want. To have the feeling of slight disappointment is not a bad thing. It speaks to what they have done this year and where we are headed as a program."
Â
Syracuse's varsity eight crossed the finish line in 6:25.351, less than two seconds behind Virginia (6:23.415) and ahead of Duke (6:29.505), Miami, Clemson and Louisville to score 32 points for the Orange. The result pushed Syracuse ahead of Duke in the team standings by one point.
Â
The Orange second varsity eight pushed Virginia to the finish coming within less than two seconds of the Cavaliers for a second-place finish and 24 team points. Syracuse beat Duke, Miami, Clemson and Louisville, respectively.
Â
The varsity four and second varsity four both finished third to score 14 and seven points, respectively. The varsity four crossed the finish line in 7:16.046, behind Virginia and Duke. The second varsity four finished in 7:21.519, also behind Duke and Virginia.
Â
The Orange third varsity eight started the day with a fourth-place finish with a time of 6:53.050, earning six team points. Virginia won the race followed by Duke and Clemson.
Â
Since 2013-14 when Syracuse joined the ACC, the Orange has finished second at the conference championship two times, including 2017 and 2018, and were third in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2019 and 2021. In 2021 all five Syracuse boats placed in the top three for the first time in program history.
Â
The Orange will learn if they earn an invitation to the NCAA Championship on Tuesday, May 15 on the selection shot at 5 pm. The 2022 NCAA Championship is May 27th to May 29th at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Florida. Syracuse has competed in nine NCAA Championships, including 2021 when the Orange recorded the best team finish in program history with a 10th place performance. The Orange have competed in four of the last five NCAA Championships (2016, 2017, 2018, 2021; no championship in 2020 due to COVID-19).

50 YEARS OF SYRACUSE WOMEN'S ATHLETICS
Orange alumni, fans and friends are invited to share in a year-long celebration of 50 years of Syracuse University women's athletics. Events and special recognition of all female student-athletes who have donned the Block S to represent Syracuse University and the Athletics Department since 1971-72 will be held throughout the 2021-22 seasons. As we celebrate this history, we acknowledge those who have gone before us to set the standard we strive to achieve today so we can pave the way for the future. We reflect on the history of women in sport, admire their sacrifices, recognize their contributions and accomplishments, and honor their legacy.
