Pair of Hat Tricks Leads No. 8 'Cuse Over UVM
8/27/2023 4:03:00 PM | Field Hockey
Eefke van den Nieuwenhof and Pieke van de Pas each scored hat tricks while adding two assists apiece as the Orange racked up 26 points on nine goals and eight assists as a team. It was the second game in a 24-hour stretch for the Orange after besting Sacred Heart 6-1 on Saturday. The pair join Shannon Taylor and Martina Loncarica, who had similar scorelines against University of New Hampshire on Sept. 21, 2008.
All told, eight different players put up points for the Orange (2-0), including career-firsts for Bo Madden and Hattie Madden. Lana Hamilton put up two helpers, her second-career multi-assist game.
How it Happened
- Van de Pas got the scoring started in the eighth minute on a cross from van den Nieuwenhof on a bouncing pass into the middle.
- The host Catamounts pushed home an equalizer with 31 seconds left in the first quarter, deadlocking the game after 15 minutes.
- It would be nearly 15 more minutes before the Orange struck again, this time on a long cross from van de Pas on the sideline all the way in near the penalty spot for Willemijn Boogert to tip in for a 2-1 halftime lead.
- The second half was Syracuse going away as van den Nieuenhof converted her second career penalty stroke in the 37th minute. It was her second such goal in the last four games for the Orange, dating back to the first round of the 2022 NCAA Tournament. That was the only unassisted goal of the day for Syracuse.
- In the 41st minute, van de Pas and van den Nieuwenhof connected again as the latter slotted a pass in for the former deep in the Vermont zone.
- Hattie Madden got her first collegiate goal on a chaos play as Hamilton split two defenders with the pass before Hattie Madden hit a backhanded goal, making it 5-1 Syracuse after 45 minutes.
- Van de Pas completed the hat trick in the 51st minute on a perfect feed from the sideline by Aiden Drabick.
- Less than a minute later, Bo Madden joined her twin sister on the scoresheet. Van de Pas sent a long cross from midfield to Bo Madden near the arc, and with no defender close by the latter let one rip to the near post for a 7-1 lead.
- Ninety seconds later, it was van den Nieuwenhof for her second of the day, burying a nifty drop pass from Hamilton on a penalty corner for an 8-1 advantage.
- The senior captain completed the hat trick in the 58th minute as van den Nieuwenhof stayed with a broken corner play, finishing a pass from Myrthe van Bolhuis for the 9-1 final score.
- The Orange assisted on every possible goal, sans the van den Nieuwenhof penalty stroke. Syracuse tallied 26 points on the day behind its nine goals and eight assists.
- Syracuse out-shot the Catamounts 27-5 over the 60 minute contest, putting 16 chances on cage. Brooke Borzymowski played in the first 45 minutes of the game before she was spelled by Abby Neitch, who made one save in her second career game. Their counterpart, Lauren Halenkamp, made five saves for Vermont.
- Eleven players came off the bench for Syracuse, including first appearances of 2023 by Jannemijn Deutman and Leah Morrison.
- Saturday's offensive display was the first collegiate hat trick for both van de Pas and van den Nieuwenhof, as well as career bests in points.
- The No. 8 Orange make their home debut on Friday, taking on Monmouth (0-1).
- Game time at J.S. Coyne Stadium is slated for 4 p.m. on ACC Network Extra. Ian Nicholas and Jesse Cooke have the call.
- Syracuse is 5-0 all-time against Monmouth, including a 3-0 win on the Jersey Shore last season. Friday's tilt will be the first meeting between the squads in Central New York since a 5-0 'Cuse win during the National Championship campaign in 2015.
